  5.                  Welcome to the Shareware version of X-DOS 5.0.
  6.  
  7.           X-DOS 5.0 is a complete replacement for MS-DOS  or DR-DOS 5.0.
  8.           It  is a  self  bootable  single  user,  single  tasking  Disk 
  9.           Operating  System  compatible with  MS-DOS  up to version 5.0.
  10.           Existing applications running on MS-DOS will run on X-DOS. All
  11.           utilities and  commands available in  MS-DOS are also existing
  12.           in X-DOS.

  14.           This  version of X-DOS 5.0 is for evaluation only and contains
  15.           some    limitations as far as its features and what you can do
  16.           with it.

  18.           The  shareware  version  has  all  the  basic  features of the
  19.           professional  version  less  the  advanced  memory  management
  20.           modules such the capacity to load DOS in High Memory Area, the
  21.           EMS  driver for 386 machines, the tools to load device drivers
  22.           and  TSRs in  the Upper  Memory Blocks and  the possibility to  
  23.           relocate  buffers  in  XMS or expanded  memory. Also the cache 
  24.           facility of X-DOS has been disabled.

  26.           This  version is provided to you by HBS directly or one of its
  27.           distributors  or  through  Bulletin  Board  Systems or through
  28.           computer  clubs  or  friends.  It  will be  distributed to you
  29.           either free of charge or at low cost depending on the media if
  30.           sold through distributors. It consists only of a diskette that
  31.           contains  the DOS itself and the manual named XDOSMAN.ZIP. You
  32.           can    print out this file directly on any dot matrix or laser
  33.           printer  or view its contents on your screen by using the TYPE
  34.           command or by loading it in your word processor.

  36.           If  you have obtained  this  evaluation  copy  of X-DOS, it is
  37.           probably  because  you are curious about what X-DOS 5.0 is. If
  38.           so, we   strongly  encourage  you to carefully read the manual
  39.           since,  though  X-DOS  is  very  compatible  with  the  MS-DOS
  40.           commands,  there are  many  features  available  in  X-DOS not
  41.           available  in other DOS's which you  might not be  aware of at
  42.           first  glance. Also, some commands  already existing in MS-DOS
  43.           have   been  greatly  improved  and  offer  several  modes  of
  44.           operation ...

  46.           X-DOS also comes in one version that can either be booted from
  47.           Disk or from ROM. If you have any interest in the ROM version,
  48.           you    can contact HBS directly to obtain a copy of the ROMKIT
  49.           utility in order to generate a ROM X-DOS.

  77.                        First Steps for installing X-DOS 5.0

  79.           You should obtain three files  containing all the X-DOS binary
  80.           files  and  manual files.  XDOS??-1.ZIP  and  XDOS??-2 contain 
  81.           the  X-DOS  system files  and all the  utilities.  XDOSMAN.ZIP 
  82.           contains the X-DOS manual.

  84.           You should first Unzip these 3 files in a subdirectory of your
  85.           disk,   say named X-DOS. Then FROM THAT SAME DIRECTORY run the
  86.           INSTALL  program. As X-DOS is no ordinary software, it needs a
  87.           bootable media to start. First try it on a diskette. Put a 1.2
  88.           Mb  diskette in drive A and tell  INSTALL to  install X-DOS on
  89.           that  diskette (you will  need  2x360K diskettes to install X-
  90.           DOS).  The  INSTALL   program  will  guide   you  through  the
  91.           procedure.  Once  INSTALL in finished,  your target media is a
  92.           bootable MS-DOS compatible diskette.

  94.           If  you wish to install X-DOS on your hard disk, you should be
  95.           aware  that  X-DOS does  not  destroy  the MS-DOS system files
  96.           (IO.SYS  and MSDOS.SYS) so it is easy to re-SYS MS-DOS back to
  97.           your  hard  disk. Also  X-DOS  supports  all MS-DOS partitions
  98.           including  extended  partitions and  partitions  above 32Mb as
  99.           well as DISK MANAGER and SPEEDSTOR without any other drivers.
